Adflo: no airflow and no alarm — the fault with no warning

Ownership information, not safety advice. Does not replace training or a workplace RPE assessment.

Symptom

You notice no air is reaching the headtop, but neither the audible alarm nor any LED has triggered.

What it means

This is 3M's own "No air flow, no alarm(s)" fault. It is the most dangerous fault on the manual's troubleshooting table precisely because the alarm system — designed to warn you when airflow drops — hasn't fired. The manual treats "breathing becomes difficult" and any suspicion that protection has stopped as its own immediate-exit condition, independent of whether an alarm has sounded.

Airflow can stop without any alarm — leave first

Steps you can do yourself

  1. Leave the contaminated area

Exit the work area immediately if you suspect airflow has stopped or breathing becomes difficult — don't try to finish the task or attempt any physical check while you're still in the contaminated area.

The manual is explicit: "Leave the contaminated area immediately if any of the following conditions occur: ... Breathing becomes difficult." (p.17)

  2. Check the battery pack contact for damage

Inspect the battery pack's contact area for bent or broken pins/contacts.

3M's troubleshooting table lists "Battery contact on battery pack is damaged" as the first probable cause for this fault, with "Check that the battery contact is not bent or broken" as the corrective action.

  3. Fully charge the battery pack

Fully charge the battery pack and retest — it may simply be completely depleted rather than faulty.

The manual's second listed cause is "Battery is completely depleted," with the corrective action "Fully charge the battery pack."
