Which Speedglas do I have?
Ownership information, not safety advice. Does not replace training or a workplace RPE assessment.
Speedglas welding headtops span two very different eras: the current Adflo-powered lineup (9100-Air, 9100 FX-Air, 9100 MP, G5-01, G5-03 Pro Air) and the discontinued 9000/9002 series run from either a legacy Adflo blower or a Fresh-air C compressed-air supply. Every cue below traces to 3M's own EMEA Adflo Technical Datasheet, the Adflo user instructions, or the legacy Speedglas catalogue parts list — where we couldn't source a cue, we've left it out rather than guessed.
Speedglas 9100-Air Current
Identifying cues
- Classified EN 12941 TH2 in 3M's own headtop/filter compatibility table — if your paperwork or approval label shows TH2, that's consistent with the 9100-Air, not the G5-01 or 9100 MP (both TH3).
- Of the four current EMEA breathing tubes, only the silencer/QRS tube (83 40 09) is ticked across particulate, A1B1E1, and A2 gas filters in the datasheet's compatibility matrix for this headtop — the self-adjusting, heavy-duty rubber, and long tubes (83 40 16/17/19) are ticked for the particulate filter only.
Speedglas 9100 FX-Air Current
Our local EMEA datasheet's breathing-tube and TH2/TH3 compatibility tables list "9100 Air" as a column but don't separately break out "9100 FX-Air" — we haven't asserted a TH class or tube-by-tube result for FX-Air specifically, only the grouping above; treat as needs-verification until confirmed against the FX-Air's own headtop documentation.
Identifying cues
- 3M's Adflo user instructions list the 9100 FX-Air alongside the 9100 Air, 9100 MP, and M-series headgear as permitted to use the sound-dampening SG-50W breathing tube. The manual's separate, mandatory requirement to use the SG-50W tube with an HE filter + OV/AG cartridge combination names only the 9100 Air and 9100 MP welding helmets — not the 9100 FX-Air.
Speedglas 9100 MP Current
Identifying cues
- Classified EN 12941 TH3 in 3M's own headtop/filter compatibility table — distinguishes it from the base 9100-Air (TH2).
- One of only two headtops (with the 9100-Air) that the user instructions' mandatory clause names as requiring the SG-50W tube for the HE filter + OV/AG cartridge combination — the 9100 FX-Air appears only on the separate permitted-use list for that tube.
Speedglas G5-01 Current
Identifying cues
- Classified EN 12941 TH3 in 3M's own headtop/filter compatibility table.
- Of the four current EMEA breathing tubes, only the silencer/QRS tube (83 40 09) is ticked across particulate, A1B1E1, and A2 gas filters in the datasheet's compatibility matrix for this headtop — the self-adjusting, heavy-duty rubber, and long tubes (83 40 16/17/19) are ticked for the particulate filter only, the same pattern as 9100-Air and 9100 MP.
Speedglas G5-03 Pro Air Current
Identifying cues
- The only headtop in 3M's compatibility table whose TH class changes with the filter fitted: TH3 with the particulate filter, TH2 with an A1B1E1/A2 gas filter — the datasheet itself flags that "for certain products the TH2/TH3 classification may depend upon the filters used with the helmet/headtop."
- The only headtop/filter combination the datasheet marks incompatible with the silencer/QRS breathing tube (83 40 09) is G5-03 Pro Air fitted with the particulate (TH3) filter — for that specific configuration, one of the particulate-only tubes is used instead.
Speedglas 9000 / 9002 with Fresh-air C or legacy Adflo Discontinued
Identifying cues
- Uses 3M's older two-digit-block part numbering (e.g. 44 66 xx / 46 66 xx for the Adflo-equipped shield, 44 88 xx / 46 88 xx for the Fresh-air C-equipped shield) rather than the current 83xxxx Adflo numbering.
- On the legacy catalogue's own diagram, the Adflo blower/battery sits mounted directly on the back of the headgear rather than on a separate belt — a visually different form factor from the current belt-mounted Adflo systems shown on 9100/G5 headtops.
- If Adflo-equipped, the battery is marked "83 76 20" (standard) or "83 76 21" (Heavy-Duty) — the legacy NiMH-era pack, per the catalogue and our supersession record — not the current Li-ion packs (837630/837631 EMEA, 35-1099-07 US).
- If Fresh-air C-equipped, there's no battery or blower at all: air is supplied by hose from a regulator/filtration unit (the catalogue's 85 20/21-series parts), not a belt-mounted PAPR.
Adflo blower generation: NiMH-era vs Li-ion Current
Not a headtop — this entry helps you tell which generation of Adflo blower/battery you're running, since the blower itself carries no model name.
Identifying cues
- Legacy NiMH-era pack: battery marked "83 76 20" (standard) or "83 76 21" (Heavy-Duty), pairing with charger "83 31 01" or 6-position charge device "83 32 06" — discontinued and superseded.
- Current Li-ion pack: battery marked "83 76 30" (EMEA standard), "83 76 31" (EMEA Heavy-Duty), or "35-1099-07" (US) — pairing with charger "83 31 11" (EMEA) or "35-0099-08" (US). Do not mix generations of battery and charger.
