What is the Savage A40 air helmet?

Updated 2026-07-07

The “Savage A40 air helmet” refers to ESAB’s Savage A40 PAPR — a US-market, NIOSH-approved powered air purifying respirator kit built around a prepared-for-PAPR variant of ESAB’s Savage A40 auto-darkening welding helmet (helmet SKU 0700500400). It’s sold as the complete kit 0700002400 (“Savage A40 9-13 Black, with NIOSH PAPR”).

Per ESAB’s own fact sheet and instruction manual, the system is NIOSH 42 CFR 84 approved and also references ANSI Z87.1, CSA Z94.3, and CE EN379/EN175/AS-NZS 1338.1 standards. It uses a rechargeable Li-ion battery (4400mAh, ~3.5 hour charge, rated for 500 charges) and three airflow levels (Level 1 ≥170 l/min, Level 2 200 l/min, Level 3 230 l/min).

Important: ESAB also sells a separate EMEA system, the EPR-X1/EPR-X1.1 (EN 12941 TH3P), which shares related Savage helmet branding but uses its own, non-interchangeable part-number range. The US Savage A40 PAPR kit (0700002xxx parts) and the EMEA EPR-X1 (07005009xx parts) should be treated as two distinct systems for fitment purposes — always check your unit’s approval label before mixing parts between them.
