Does loose-fitting a PAPR require face fit testing?

Updated 2026-07-06

No — in both the UK and US frameworks in our records, loose-fitting PAPRs are exempt from fit testing. HSE’s INDG479 (October 2025) states “powered or constant-flow airline BA RPE with loose-fitting hoods or helmets do not require fit testing,” while tight-fitting power-assisted RPE under positive pressure (EN 12942, TM classes) still does. In the US, OSHA’s 1910.134(f) limits fit testing to tight-fitting facepieces; loose-fitting PAPRs — the type most welding headtops belong to — do not require it, though medical evaluation and training still apply.

This exemption is specifically about the fit test, not about approval or maintenance obligations generally — a loose-fitting welding PAPR still needs to be used in its approved configuration (correct headtop, filters and battery per the unit’s NIOSH/EN approval label), and UK users still need routine thorough examination under COSHH. If your respirator is a tight-fitting type (e.g. a power-assisted mask to EN 12942, or a tight facepiece under OSHA’s APF table), fit testing does apply — check which category your specific system falls into before assuming the loose-fitting exemption applies to you.
